Training log examples: Digital and print media designer (Mediengestalter/in Digital und Print)
The training log of a media designer lists concrete design jobs: which media product you designed, prepared or output for which purpose and with which software. The first two years are the same for all trainees, covering print, web and data preparation. In the third year your company chooses a specialisation (project management, design concept, print media or digital media), which shapes your entries. The examples show one week from each of the three years.

Example weeks
This is what one week in the training log can look like. Always write your own entries about what you actually did. The form itself stays German, as it is submitted in German.
Year 1 Designing a flyer to customer specifications
Set up the layout in InDesign: grid, paragraph and character styles, swatches
Cut out images, adjusted them to 300 ppi and converted them to CMYK
Created a proof and worked in the customer’s change requests
Year 2 School week: website and data output
Optimised images for the web, compared formats and file sizes
Implemented the design in HTML and CSS, checked responsive behaviour on a phone
LF 4: Outputting PDF files for print and screen
Year 2 Logo and design concept
Developed sketches and vector drafts in Illustrator, presented three variants
Set up the chosen variant in black and white and in colour and tested it at minimal size
Started a short style guide with clear space and colour values
Year 3 Project week in the specialisation
Created content in the content management system and maintained page templates
Implemented interactive elements and tested them in different browsers
Kept the project documentation and work log

Tips for this training log
- Name the medium, format and program: “Flyer DL, InDesign, 4c” says more than “did layout”.
- Record proof rounds. How you reacted to customer wishes is a professional learning point.
- Keep customer motifs and project names anonymous. Describe the design task, not the brand.
- From the third year your log shows the specialisation. Write the entries accordingly so they fit your project work.
Common mistakes
- “Worked at the computer” with no media product and software. That says nothing about what you learned.
- Entering your own leisure projects as company work. The log documents training, not a portfolio.
- Mixing school days and company hours so the weekly total does not match the working time.
