Training log examples: Industrial mechanic (Industriemechaniker/in)
The training log of industrial mechanics covers manufacturing, assembly and maintenance tasks. Describe which part you made from which material, with which process and tolerances. The first year is mostly filing, drilling, measuring and joining, later turning, milling, control technology, maintenance and fault finding. In the last year the in-company job for the final exam takes centre stage.

Example weeks
This is what one week in the training log can look like. Always write your own entries about what you actually did. The form itself stays German, as it is submitted in German.
Year 1 Basic training: filing, drilling, measuring
Drilled and countersunk holes and cut M6 and M8 threads by hand
Checked dimensions with a calliper and square and logged deviations
Cleaned the workplace, looked after the tools and put them away
LF 1: Materials and their properties
Year 2 Turning and milling on machine tools
Milled a keyway on the milling machine and checked it with a micrometer
Checked the cooling lubricant and disposed of chips properly
Wrote the production report, noted scrap and discussed the cause
LF 5: Choosing coolants for machining
Year 3 Maintenance and fault finding on a plant
Replaced a faulty proximity switch and tested the function in the control program
Dismantled a pneumatic cylinder, replaced the seals and reassembled it
Filled in the maintenance report and reported the spare parts needed
LF 13: Pneumatic and electro-pneumatic controls
Year 4 In-company job for the final exam
Assembled and aligned the assembly and checked function and dimensional accuracy
Documented the results and took photos for the documentation
Practised the presentation for the technical discussion with my trainer
LF 15: Optimising technical systems

Tips for this training log
- Name the material, process and measuring tool, for example “shaft in C45 turned, checked with a micrometer”. It shows what you really did.
- Write down tolerances and measured values if you know them. Deviations and their causes show progress.
- Record safety: briefings on machines, hazardous substances and lockout/tagout, in the instruction field.
- Note maintenance and fault-finding tasks: symptom, test, cause, action.
Common mistakes
- Only “filed” or “turned” without workpiece, material and dimension. Nobody can tell what you learned.
- Hiding scrap and mistakes. A measured fault with its cause is a good entry.
- Mixing school topics and in-company tasks in the same field instead of keeping them apart.
