Training
"Shorten it? Can't, a contract is a contract."
You would like to shorten your training because of good performance or prior education.
§ 8 BBiG
This is allowed
Shortening is possible — with an application + the chamber's approval!
The training period can be shortened by the competent body (IHK/HWK) on a joint application by the trainee and company if the training goal is expected to be achieved in the shortened time (§ 8 (1) BBiG). Grounds for crediting: A-levels/technical A-levels, relevant prior education, good performance. Rule of thumb: up to 12 months' shortening is common. An extension when needed is also possible (§ 8 (2)). When in doubt: check early admission to the exam (§ 45 (1) BBiG).
What the law says
§ 8 (1) BBiG – Shortening
On a joint application by the trainee and the training company, the competent body must shorten the training period if the training goal is expected to be achieved in the shortened time.
§ 45 (1) BBiG – Early admission to the exam
Trainees may be admitted to the final exam before the end of their training period if their performance justifies it.
What you can do
- Submit the application jointly with the company — if needed, ask the IHK to mediate.
- A-levels: usually 12 months' shortening, technical college entrance qualification 6 months (varies by occupation).
- With top grades at vocational school: an early exam is possible (§ 45 BBiG).
- Even if the company refuses: the trainee can apply for an early exam unilaterally.
