Vocational school
"Skipping school has consequences."
You missed vocational school without an excuse — what may the company do?
§ 13 Nr. 2 BBiG / § 14 Abs. 1 Nr. 4 BBiG / § 22 BBiG
This is allowed
Yes — vocational school is compulsory, and absences can lead to dismissal.
You are released for lessons, but you are also obliged to attend (§ 13 no. 2 BBiG); the company must encourage you to attend school (§ 14 (1) no. 4 BBiG) and may ask for proof of attendance. Unexcused absence is a breach of duty: there can be a warning, you lose your right to pay for the time skipped, and repeated truancy after a warning can be a good cause for termination (§ 22 (2) BBiG). On top of that, there are consequences under state school law. If you are ill, your sick note also covers school — but you must inform the school separately under its rules.
What the law says
§ 13 no. 2 BBiG – Attendance
Trainees are obliged to take part in training measures for which they are released under § 15.
§ 14 (1) no. 4 BBiG – Encouragement
Trainers must encourage trainees to attend vocational school.
§ 22 (2) no. 1 BBiG – Termination
After probation, termination without notice is possible for good cause.
What you can do
- Ill? Report to the company AND to the school according to its rules.
- If you have received a warning, take it seriously — the next one may be the last.
- Problems at school? Talk to a teacher, trainer or training adviser before you skip.
- Late because of the bus or train: report it to the school immediately and keep proof.
