"You write your training log at home."
There is no time at work for the training record — you are supposed to keep it in your free time.
§ 14 Abs. 2 BBiG / § 13 Nr. 7 BBiG
The boss may NOT do that
No — the company must give you time for it at your workplace.
Keeping the training record (the training log) is your duty (§ 13 no. 7 BBiG) — but it is training time, not free time. The company must expressly give you the opportunity to keep it at your workplace and review it regularly (§ 14 (2) BBiG). So it may not refer you to your evenings. This matters because the training log is a requirement for admission to the final exam (§ 43 (1) no. 2 BBiG): without kept records you cannot sit the exam. Whether it is on paper or electronic is set in the training contract.
What the law says
§ 14 (2) BBiG – Training record
Trainers must encourage trainees to keep training records and review them regularly. Trainees must be given the opportunity to keep the record at their workplace.
§ 13 no. 7 BBiG – Duty
Trainees must keep a written or electronic training record.
§ 43 (1) no. 2 BBiG – Admission
Anyone who has submitted the required training record is to be admitted to the final exam.
What you can do
- Suggest a fixed time each week, e.g. 30 minutes on Fridays.
- Write promptly — at the end of the week you still remember what you did.
- A digital training log saves time if your company allows electronic records.
- If there is no time, note that — it matters if admission becomes an issue.

Subject: Time for the training record
Dear [name of trainer],
in recent weeks I have had no opportunity during working hours to keep my training record. Under § 14 (2) BBiG, trainees must be given the opportunity to keep the training record at their workplace.
I suggest scheduling [day, time, duration] for this each week. I am happy to submit the records to you regularly for review afterwards.
Kind regards
[Your name]
