Pay
"Buy your own tools!"
You are supposed to pay for work materials, books or tools out of your own pocket.
§ 14 BBiG
The boss may NOT do that
No! Training materials are the company's responsibility!
The training company is obliged to provide you free of charge with the training materials needed for the training and for sitting the exams (§ 14 (1) no. 3 BBiG). This includes tools, materials, specialist books and any protective clothing the company requires.
What the law says
§ 14 (1) no. 3 BBiG – Training materials
Training companies must provide trainees free of charge with the training materials, in particular tools, materials and specialist literature, that are required for the vocational training and for sitting interim and final exams.
What you can do
- Tools, specialist books, software, work clothing: all the trainer's duty.
- Textbooks for vocational school are often the trainee's responsibility (depends on the federal state).
- Keep all receipts if you have paid for something up front — demand reimbursement!
- Prescribed safety clothing must always be provided by the company.

Subject: Provision of training materials
Dear [name of trainer],
for my training I need [describe specific material/tool/book]. So far it has been suggested that I bear these costs myself.
Under § 14 (1) no. 3 BBiG, training companies are obliged to provide trainees free of charge with the training materials required for the vocational training and for sitting the exams.
I kindly ask that the required materials be provided by the company [or that the costs I have already paid, amounting to [amount], be reimbursed].
Kind regards
[Your name]
