"Next week you're helping out at our partner company."

You are supposed to work at another company that is not your training company.

§ 10 Abs. 5 BBiG / § 14 BBiG / § 1 AÜG

It depends …
Only if it is part of your training — you may not be lent out as a temp.
Your training takes place at the training site named in your contract. Training periods at another company are possible if they serve the training goal and are agreed — e.g. in joint training (§ 10 (5) BBiG) or because your own company cannot teach certain content. Then someone there must actually train you, and the pay and obligations of your training contract continue. What is not allowed is "lending" you to another firm as cheap help so it saves on staff — that is not training (§ 14 (3) BBiG) and may also be unauthorised temporary agency work.

What the law says

§ 10 (5) BBiG – Joint training
Several persons or companies may cooperate in a training network, provided responsibility for the individual training periods is ensured.
§ 14 (3) BBiG – Purpose of training
Trainees may only be given tasks that serve the purpose of the training.

What you can do

  1. Ask which content from the training plan you are to learn there.
  2. Get the arrangement in writing — with duration and a contact person on site.
  3. Your pay, vacation and vocational school continue unchanged.
  4. If you are just cheap labour, contact the IHK/HWK training advisers.
