"A youth health check-up (J1)? You don't need that."
You are a young person and are supposed to work without a first examination having taken place.
§ 32 JArbSchG
The boss may NOT do that
The first examination is mandatory — no certificate, no employment!
Young people may only be employed if they have been medically examined before starting employment (first examination, § 32 JArbSchG). After one year of employment: a follow-up examination (§ 33). The examinations are free of charge (certificate reimbursement via the federal state). The employer MUST have the certificate — otherwise there is an employment ban. Violations are an administrative offence (§ 58 JArbSchG).
What the law says
§ 32 JArbSchG – First examination
A young person may only be employed in the first twelve months after the start of the training or employment if they have been examined by a doctor within the last fourteen months before the start of employment and the employer holds a certificate issued by that doctor.
§ 33 JArbSchG – First follow-up examination
After the end of the first year of employment, the employer may only continue to employ the young person if the young person has undergone a follow-up examination within the last three months.
What you can do
- The examination is free of charge at the family doctor or the company doctor.
- Keep the certificate (the yellow-pink-green slip) safe.
- Follow-up examination after 1 year — keep an eye on the date yourself.
- Without a certificate, you are not lawfully allowed to work.
